Hostgator Review Page Added

I’ve been a HostGator customer for almost 2 years now. I have the reseller plan, however I only use it to host my own websites and blogs on. One of the reasons if because Hostgator are a Cpanel based host, and Fantastico – the script installer is usually included. Fantastico makes it a doddle to create, manage and update lots of WordPress accounts. You don’t have to use WordPress of course, as Fantastico supports all the major blogging and CMS engines and many of the leading open source shopping carts.

60 Seconds with…….. Andy Manning, UK2 Product Manager

Read our first of many UK2 staff interivews!

Starting with Andy Manning, UK2 Product Manager.

Andy started working for UK2 in June 2006 as Sales Manager and then took over the Product Manager role in January 2008.

Andy comes from an IT background having worked for a leading Broadband provider, he also has a black belt in Karate and is a keen Cricketer, he is living proof that a degree in electronic music can take you places.

  1. Tell us about being the UK2 Product Manager, what does it involve?

Well this involves many things as I work between the development and marketing teams. Basically it’s split into a few areas.

There’s product launches, which means managing timescales and workloads as well as testing.

Product marketing, which involves working with the marketing team on campaigns, providing terms and conditions, and website content changes.

Product management, which involves managing the existing portfolio and looking for improvements and potential new products, and also working with the technical team on infrastructure as well as training internal staff.

Reporting (naturally) and I also do a fair bit of copywriting for the website.

Oh and looking at competitors products too to make sure we’re still the best!

  2. Describe a normal day for you? That’s a tough one as I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day other than forgetting to have breakfast until at least 11 a.m. I know it’s bad for me but usually I have something to get straight on with!.

When we are launching products it’s usually a hectic mix of fixing problems with the set-up, writing copy and co-ordinating many things to happen at once. When we don’t have one it’s a case of planning as much as possible, although we almost always have something launching at the moment!

  3. What has been the best project so far?I’d have to say the Reseller Hosting as this is an entirely new product that we have never offered before, plus I think it’s a really excellent package (I have to say that though as I am responsible for it!). We also managed to launch it from conception to completion in a ridiculously short amount of time.
  4. And the worst?!I think that’d have to be Reseller Hosting too! Just because of the sheer amount of effort to get everything set up quickly, and the fact that this coincided with the E-commerce re-launch. I think everyone avoided me in the office for those last two weeks of June!
  5. What can we look forward to in the future? We are looking to add more unique services for UK2 customers to differentiate ourselves from the crowd, just like the free SSL’s 10TB servers and MoreUK2. I can’t say much about many of them yet but there’s a lot of exciting extra’s and services we’ve got planned.

We’ll definitely be adding optimisation tools soon to the Web Hosting packages, Dedicated Server back-ups and we’ve got a great ‘guaranteed win’ Web Hosting deal launching very soon.

  6. What’s the best thing about working at UK2?It’s great to be a part of a company that’s innovative and is fast becoming the market leader in the UK, ok maybe a bit of bias there…

The staff here all keep each others spirits up too with a bit of humour here and there which is essential for a happy workplace. Also being here from 2006 has meant I’ve been involved in a lot of the dramatic changes and have a lot invested in the success of UK2…not actual money though unfortunately.

  7. And tell us a bit more about yourself, what are your favourite pastimes outside of work?Well traditionally I’ve always been big into music (having done a music degree). I now don’t really get that much time to write any music but I still go to gigs and festivals. Just recently I’ve been tapping people’s knowledge here and learning some XHTML and CSS, plus I’ve run my own webhosting and e-mail server for a while and am fully a Linux (debian) convert. I’m just starting exercising again after finally growing into my post thirty paunch.
  8. Is music still a big thing for you?I still have a great love for music and am passionate about it. I always wanted to be a composer or producer of some sort but I’m glad that I can do this for fun now however I want. I don’t play the piano or trombone anymore though as I simply don’t have time to practice!
  9. What’s your claim to fame?!I once said hello to Barry Chuckle (of the Chuckle brothers) in Meadowhall in Sheffield, I have a couple of web pseudonyms too that people may have come across but that’s eclipsed by meeting Barry.
  10. On a scale of 1 to 10 how geeky are you?
  11. When I first started working for UK2 I would say I was more of a 4 or 5 maximum but I have fast become very geeky indeed. I realised this when I spent all night setting up postfix (a linux e-mail server). I still have a long way to be an uber geek though so I think it’d have to be 7.

  12. Are you Linux or Windows ;-)

Are you joking?..Oh you’re not joking. Linux of course.

UK2 Half Year Results 2008

Hi all,

This morning we have sent out a press release on the Exceptional Half Year Results for UK2.net!. You can read it below!

Bye

Nicola

LONDON, 22 July 2008

Exceptional Half Year Results for UK2.net!

Hosting company UK2.net announced today that it has followed up fantastic first quarter results with an equally successful second quarter, resulting in above target performance and exceptional half year results.

Again the success is due to excellent growth in the higher revenue and profit areas of shared and dedicated hosting, not just domain names.  Also UK2.net has seen positive growth in both new customers and existing customer renewals.

“We were extremely pleased with our Quarter 1 results, but are even happier to have continued the strong performance throughout Quarter 2, making 2008 one of our best years so far”, said Ditlev Bredahl, Managing Director / CEO of UK2.  “We have made significant changes within UK2 over the past few years, which in turn have generated significant rewards.  We have really enhanced our support, strengthened our network, launched an amazing portfolio of products and have kept our prices competitive.  Underpinning all of this is a team of dedicated UK2 employees, who promise to “Bend Over Backwards” to help all our customers.

UK2.net has been a significant player in the British and European hosting markets since 1998, and is the founder brand of the UK-2 Group.  UK2.net underwent a large organisational and strategic restructure in 2006 when the new Management Team came on board.

A three year strategy was set out that time, starting with 2006 being a clean up year where the focus was on getting the basics right and establishing a sold foundation for the future.

Then 2007 was the rollout year, where UK2’s marketing activities kicked in along with exciting changes to the portfolio and considerable investment into the organisation.

Finally 2008 is the consolidation year, where UK2 as planned is maturing into a successful, dominant hosting company growing organically and through acquisitions, and plans and strategies for future success are being conceived.

27 Spectacular Mac OS X Tools For Building and Maintaining Your Website Or Blog

One of the most common support questions concerning Mac OS X at UK2 is what OS X software we recommend for FTP, SSH, and easy website creation! Below is a compilation based on input from our staff and customers!

Best OS X Website Creation Software

Here are our picks for the best free and paid tools to create a website on your Mac!

Best Free OS X Website Creation Software

Free Website Creation Tool Winner! – Nvu – Nvu Homepage
Nvu is an open source website creation tool available for OS X as well as Linux and Windows. It is easy to use and powerful. Even newbies should be able to create a site using it and their are some decent getting started guides out there. Plus it is free and constantly improving. For OS X this is the best free html creation tool and you can download it here.

Best Paid OS X Website Creation Software

Winner! – RapidWeaver – RapidWeaver Homepage
RapidWeaver is our top pick for a paid website creation software for OS X! It is easy to use, comes with forty professional designed themes to get you started, and was the best overall choice. Just a great package and you can even use it to code all your PHP in or grab user created plugins for it. For a video tour of RapidWeaver click here or download a free trial here.

Runner Up – Freeway – Freeway Homepage
Freeway is very powerful html creation tool that allows you to do just about anything to your site. It comes with templates, an easy to use GUI, and a lot more. You can browse through a list of sites created with it and a video of it in action here. This was our second choice pick for paid website creation software.

    Other Contenders

HTML Creation Tool Award Runner Up – Cyberduck – Cyberduck Homepage
Cyberduck has so many features it would be impossible to list them all! In addition to being a rock solid FTP client it also supports Amazon S3 browsing, WebDAV, and a host of other things. This is not as easy to use as Fugu but you can do a lot more with it. Great piece of software by David Kocher!

Best paid OS X FTP Software

Winner! – Transmit 3 – Transmit 3 Homepage
Transmit 3 is the gold standard of OS X FTP software and takes the prize due to its ease of use and vast number of features. With features like tabbed multiple connections, column views, batch downloading, auto permissions, edit, it is not surprising why it won. Try the free trial and see why it has been on our recommended list for so long!

Runner Up – Captain FTP – Captain FTP Homepage
Captain FTP is another good choice and very powerful FTP software. It allows user’s to share files over a local network in order to work on a group project. A solid FTP client and well worth the small charge. For the tour and free download click here.

OneButton FTP – As the name declares this is a simple FTP utility for OS X.
RBrowser – This FTP client supports a wide range of features and the GUI is quick.

Best OS X Blog Management Software

If you blog a lot it is a lot easier to use software on your home computer to update your blog than the web interface in our opinion. One of the benifits is that you can compose an entry offline and then publish it when you get online. Below are some of the OS X we recommend to do that.

Best Free OS X Blog Management Software

Winner! – Qumana – Qumana Homepage
Qumana supports just about every blog platform and makes it a lot easier to maintain your blog! It is free and available for OS X and Windows. You can easily insert videos and images as well as edit past posts and tweak every aspect of your post. They just added ad insertion as well that lets you easily insert ads into your post using their platform. For some screenshots click here.

Best Paid OS X Blog Management Software

Winner! – MarsEdit 2 – MarsEdit 2 Homepage
MarsEdit 2 allows you to easily manage and write on WordPress, Blogger, TypePad, Movable Type, LiveJournal, Drupal, Vox, and more! It has an easy to use interface and all the features you need. I use this at home and all the customers who have purchases it love it! Download a free trial here!

Runner Up – Ecto – Ecto Homepage
Ecto supports a wide range of blogging platforms and has a well laid out interface. They have a free trial if you want to try it or take a look at some screenshots here.

    Other Contenders
Blog.Mac – A well written quick little application that is built for blogging on your .Mac account.
iBlog – A great little utility that is more like a personal diary but also lets you publish in blog format to a web page of your choice.
ScribeFire – A great addon for FireFox 3 that allows you to easily manage your blogs. Works with a wide range of blog software and highly recommended if you use FireFox.

Best OS X MySQL Management Software

MySQL can be a bit annoying to configure through PHPMyAdmin’s online interface, here is software for OS X that lets you manage your databases from your desktop.

Best Free OS X MySQL Management Software

Winner! – YourSQL – YourSQL Homepage
YourSQL is powerful with an easy to use interface! You can easily import or export your database or more advance functions such as running multi statement SQL scripts or SQL dumps.

Runner Up – CocoaMySQL – CocoaMySQL Homepage
It hasn’t been updated in a while but it is still a nice simple tool to manage your MySQL databases. Built for OS X and recommended for just simple management from time to time.

Best Paid OS X MySQL Management Software

Winner! – SQLGrinder 2 – SQLGrinder 2 Homepage
A very powerful solution and worth the money if you are dealing with MySQL every day. The interface makes creating and editing tables an ease and it has a lot of other great features. I have friends who develop PHP / MySQL apps all day and they swear this saves them hours of time each day.

Runner Up – RazorSQL – RazorSQL Homepage
One of the most powerful MySQL management suites available and the only reason it got second is the interface is just a tad harder to navigate than SQLGrinder. You can do anything with this software and highly recommended if you are a professional developer.

Best Free OS X SSH Software

Winner! – iSSH – iSSH Homepage
iSSH is a free SSH frontend for OS X and it works great! We recommend this for basic use and for beginners. It still has some advance and I recommend it for any SSH work. You can setup SSH tunneling pretty easy to bypass work filters as well.

Runner Up – iTerm – iTerm Homepage
iTerm offers multiple tab SSH and other terminal connections in an easy to use program. This is what I use for work and you can take a look at some screenshots here. Highly recommended for those that deal with SSH on a day to day basis.

Missing one? Tell me!

I hope you all enjoyed this list and please let me know if you have any suggestions for something I missed!
